'People Plus staffers to address National Council on Aging'
BRUNSWICK
Two staff members of People Plus, the Center to Get More Out of Life, will address the annual conference sponsored jointly by the National Council on Aging and the American Society of Aging March 7-10 in Chicago.
Nancy J. W. Porter, MSW, will speak on Promoting Civic Engagement," describing the center's community initiative and model program, the Elder Education in Financial Literacy Project. The program was developed through a collaborative partnership with the University of Maine's Center on Aging. Porter is the coordinator of the program through the AmericCorps VISTA Senior $ense Program.
Sara Trafton-Poe will present a paper on Intergenerational Community-Building Programs that Enhance Opportunities for Older Adults and the Communities They Live in." Poe, while under contract to AmeriCorps VISTA, coordinated The Merrymeeting Community Shares program at People Plus, a service exchange based on the Time Dollar model.
According to Sig Knudsen, executive cirector of People Plus, both Porter and Poe faced stiff competition to become presenters at the NCOA/ASA Conference. Their acceptance, he says, represents a recognition that the two projects they have been involved in are ventures that should be of interest to professionals across the country.
Also of significance is the involvement of Americorps VISTA in these two programs and the partnership that these efforts represent between local entities and organizations such as the Maine Center on Aging in Orono, and the Maine Time Bank in Portland."
Their inclusion, Knudsen adds, also represents a recognition by NCOA and ASA that People Plus is running programs that are ground-breaking and can be models for other programs in the country."
Located in Brunswick, People Plus supports an engaged, healthy and independent life for older adults, while joining with others to build community for all ages.
