Blaikie Hines of Thomaston, Maine will speak on "The Life of the Common Soldier" in the American Civil War. Mr. Hines will be wearing a Civil War uniform and do a presentation on the weapons, accoutrements and personal effects of a First Lieut. in the Union Army of 1862. He has done extensive research on Connecticut's participation in the war.

Peter Dalton, author, will visit us again and give a presentation on "Soldiers in Green: The Civil War Diaries of James Mathews of Rockland". Mr. Dalton will be accompanied by some members of the Richardson Civil War Round Table to assist him in the readings of the diaries.

Kerck Kelsey of South Freeport, Maine, the author of "Isreal Washburn, Jr. and the Race to Save the Union" and "Isreal Washburn, Jr.: Maine's Little known Giant of the Civil War", due out in October will speak to us on this member of the noted Washburn family.

Troy Harman, National Park Ranger, teacher and author, will speak on his 2001 book "Cemetery Hill -The Plan was Unchanged," an in-depth look at the 3rd day at Gettysburg and in particular, Lee's plan.

Craig L. Symonds, A Professor of History at the United States Naval Academy and noted author will discuss Confederate Major General Patrick R. Cleburne's proposal in the winter of 1864-65 that the Confederacy abolish slavery and include the freed slaves in the Rebel Army.

Dr. Stephen R Wise is a well-known authority on the Confederate use of innovative steam-propelled blockade runners during the Civil War which was vital to their war effort but also provided the nation with a folklore that centered on daredevil captains, brave women and fearless crews.
A special flag ceremony will be presented by Arthur Schade (CWRT member) and two members of the Falmouth American Legion Post 164 in honor of National Patriots Day which has been designated to commemorate the events of September 11th, 2001.

Michael Schellhammer applies his own experiences as an army officer to examine some often overlooked difficulties that volunteer leaders faced in the Civil War using the 83rd Pennsylvania Regiment as a model. "Soldiering is not Play: The Challenges of Leadership in Volunteer Regiments," is the title of his talk.

Peter Dalton (and friends) will make another attempt to make their presentation to us on "Soldiers in Green: The Civil War Diaries of James Mathews." It was snowed out last February. Mathews served as a member of Company D of the 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters. The sharpshooters green uniforms designed to make the men less conspicuous while deployed as snipers and pickets, was the first attempt at camouflage.

is always a welcome guest at the CWRT. This time he will speak to us on the Civil War monuments in Maine. Whether simple granite columns or elaborate bronze sculptures, these eloquent reminders of the Civil War grace public spaces across our state.

Robert E. L. Krick is a historian on the staff of the Richmond National Battlefield Park. His topic for our meeting will be The Seven Days battles outside Richmond in June and July 1862 which saw the emergence of R. E. Lee and the final erosion of George B. McClellan's will to win. In the course of those 140 bloody hours, Lee temporarily reversed the course of the war through a series of maneuvers and battles.
