Reaching Elders
Food Pantries across the country, including ours, are seeing an increase in the number of elderly people needing food assistance. In January 1999, the agency received funding to develop and implement a new program called “Reaching Elders”. By developing collaborative relationships with agencies, organizations and institutions providing services to seniors, we have been able to identify and offer food assistance to over 120 new senior households at risk for hunger due to low, monthly incomes. Twelve agency volunteers are now delivering food to over 37 low-income seniors who are homebound. To our knowledge, we are the only Food Assistance Program in southern Maine that has developed a means of reaching this very high-risk population.
Our "Reaching Elders" program is focused on identifying and offering food assistance to seniors now at risk for hunger due to small, monthly incomes. If you
know of anyone who is having to choose between food and other necessities, our program is there to help you. For information on whether you are qualify for food assistance, call Pam Gryspeerd at 725-1151.
