Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Beecher Preachers
by Jean Fritz

What could a housewife with six children do about slavery? Harriet Beecher Stowe grew up in a family in which her seven brothers were expected to be successful preachers and the four girls were never to speak in public. But slavery made Harriet so angry she couldn't keep quiet. Although she used a pen rather then her voice to convince people of the evils of slavery, she became more famous than any of her brothers. She firmly believed that words can make change, and by writing Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe hastened the Civil War and changed the course of American history.

The Wilding House Mystery
by Barbara Schestopol Craig

An old possible haunted house on a hill, two teenagers alone, and a stormy night with a creepy hunched over intruder knocking at the door sets the scene for intrigue and trepidation. After leaving their mother, friends, and Boston for the summer, Rachel and Scott are somewhat reluctant to help run a country inn with their dad and stepmother in quiet, quaint, Maine. As the plot moves along the two teenagers are confronted with strange happenings at the inn. Antiques are suddenly missing, the family boat is untied, strange guests are checking in and the entire atmosphere begins to feel spooky. Could it be because back in the 1860’s, Civil War days, the house was part of an Underground Railroad System for run-away slaves? Was someone murdered? Or could it all be a hoax? But why does the mystery keep growing as new characters register for a stay at the house on the hill? Pieces to the puzzle begin to fit as Rachel’s sleuthing pays off and her feelings toward her stepmother and Maine drastically change.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Hiawatha
pictures by Susan Jeffers

By the shores of Gitche Gumee…
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's classic The Song of Hiawatha weaves together the beautiful oral traditions of the American Indian into a grand epic poem. In this excerpt of some of its most lyrical verses, artist Susan Jeffers illuminates Longfellow's hypnotic account of Hiawatha's boyhood. Rich in imagery and detail, the exquisitely rendered paintings introduce readers to one of America's favorite poems.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was a beloved American Poet whose verse conveyed a sensitivity toward universal human emotions. Published in 1855, The Song of Hiawatha was an immediate success both in America and Europe.
Susan Jeffers is the acclaimed illustrator of Brother Eagle, Sister Sky: A message from Chief Seattle (Dial). Ms. Jeffers has illustrated many books for children and is a recipient of the Caldecott Honor award.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Paul Revere's Ride
illustrated by Ted Rand

Longfellow's well-known poem never appeared to better advantage: Rand has created a rich rendition of the Revolutionary landscape. And Revere himself is the perfect patriot, rugged and intense as he saddles up, "Ready to ride and spread the alarm - through every Middlesex village and farm." As Revere rides, the urgency of the pictures inspires the reader to flip the pages at an increasing pace until the dramatic confrontation of the Redcoats and the farmers. If there is any complaint here, it is with Longfellow himself, for rearranging the facts to exclude mention of Revere's fellow riders, Dawes and Prescott. Nevertheless, this is a gem of a lesson about one glorious morning in America's history.

Feathertop
Based on the Tale by Nathaniel Hawthorn

by Robert D. San Souci

This tale by Nathaniel Hawthorne was first published in The International Magazine in 1852 under the title "Feathertop: A Moralized Legend." In adapting the tale, the author has sought to retain as much of the original style and spirit of the story as possible. The somewhat changed ending was inspired by a quotation (used here as the epigraph) from Hawthorne's own notebooks. The illustrations offer details of costume and setting that reflect the life and look of colonial New England in the 1750s.
