CHAMBERLAIN BOOKS

  In the Hands of Providence:
Joshua L. Chamberlain and the American Civil War

by Alice Rains Trulock

This remarkable biography traces the life and times of Joshua L. Chamberlain, the professor-turned-soldier who led the Twentieth Maine Regiment to glory at Gettysburg, earned a battlefield promotion to brigadier general from Ulysses S. Grant at Petersburg, and who was wounded six times during the course of the Civil War. Chosen to accept the formal Confederate surrender at Appomattox, Chamberlain endeared himself to succeeding generations with his unforgettable salutation of Robert E. Lee’s vanquished army. After the war, he went on to serve four terms as governor of his home state of Maine and later became president of Bowdoin College. He wrote prolifically about the war, including The Passing of the Armies, a classic account of the final campaign of the Army of the Potomac.
The late Alice Rains Trulock was a retired personnel manager and politician in Indianapolis.

  Joshua Chamberlain
The Soldier and the Man
by Edward G. Longacre

Joshua Chamberlain became the “hero of Gettysburg” when he and his regiment, the 20th Maine, bravely held Little Round Top against a determined Rebel assault. Chamberlain’s reputation as a soldier continued to grow in the decades that followed the war. Yet Joshua Chamberlain, the soldier, is only part of the story of this remarkable life.
Here is the first biography to fully assess this complicated man. Edward G. Longacre skillfully investigates and analyzes all aspects of his life and character – before and after the Civil War. And Longacre examines Chamberlain’s extraordinary military career as a Union officer, drawing on independent – and occasionally contradictory – eyewitness account of his battlefield actions. Longacre’s meticulous research suggests that Chamberlain’s own account of his military actions can, in fact, no longer be taken entirely at face value.

  Soul of the Lion
by Willard M. Wallace

Soul of the Lion fills the last big gap in Civil War biography. This is the first published biography of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the hero of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. Chamberlain was a State of Maine man to the marrow of his bones. He was born on a farm in Brewer, Maine, where today a big bridge is named after him; he was Maine-educated; he served with Maine regiments; he was active in Maine politics and president of Bowdoin, his great college; he closed his life of service by acting as Port Surveyor in Portland. Willard M. Wallace, himself Maine-born, has told with sympathy, insight, and understanding the heretofore overlooked—except by Kenneth Roberts and John J. Pullen—life-story of one of the greatest “Down East Yankees.”

  Joshua Chamberlain:
A Hero's Life and Legacy

by John J. Pullen

Exploring the mystique that surrounds this modern icon, Pullen's newest book is written with wit and insight. He provides an understanding of Chamberlain that is often missing from other biographies, focusing on his later life through the lens of his experiences during the Civil War and examining his place in history --both as man and myth. For those who already admire him, this book will lend confidence to their judgment; for those first meeting him, Joshua Chamberlain may provide the hero they have been seeking.

The Twentieth Maine
by John J. Pullen

A history of Chamberlain's regiment, it provides a detailed account of the experience of one volunteer outfit from Maine and its fascinating and disproportionate contribution to the Union cause. Pullen's writing has been described as "rich in the flavor of war".

  Fanny & Joshua:
The Enigmatic Lives of Frances Caroline Adams
and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

by Diane Monroe Smith

Other biographies of Maine's favorite son have dealt with Chamberlain's relationship with his wife, Fanny, as shadowy conjecture and unflattering insinuation. This effort to approach Chamberlain as a son, husband, father, and friend has meant an eight-year search and examination of thousands of pages of correspondence and archival material. The reader will meet Fanny and Joshua and come to better understand the dynamics of their relationship.

  Chamberlain at Petersburg
The Charge at Fort Hell June 18, 1864

by Diane Smith

In Chamberlain at Petersburg, author Diane Monroe Smith introduces us to General Grant’s 1864 Virginia campaign and Chamberlain’s part in it. Bringing us into the trenches before Petersburg, the author then presents “The Charge at Fort Hell”.
Forgotten and unpublished, “The Charge at Fort Hell” was written by Chamberlain and recounts his experiences in June of 1864, at Rives’ Salient where he was seriously wounded.
Considering the accomplishments and renown of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, both as soldier and author, it is fortuitous when one of his manuscripts is found. Smith also uses her prodigious research skills to thoroughly annotate Chamberlain’s narrative allowing the reader a complete understanding of the names and events mentioned.

The Passing of the Armies
by Joshua L. Chamberlain

In this, his "memoir", Chamberlain offers his own account of the final campaign of the Civil War. With rare eloquence, he describes not only the troop movements, the clash and chaos of battle, and the soul of the Army of the Potomac under the command of U.S. Grant, as well as his own concepts of service.

Blood & Fire
at Gettysburg
General Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine

Stand Firm Ye Boys from Maine
The 20th Maine and the Gettysburg Campaign
A Gripping Account of the Battle for Little Round Top

by Thomas Desjardin

Fought amid rocks and trees, amongst thick smoke, and under exceedingly stressful conditions, the battle for the southern slope of Little Round Top at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 remains one of the most celebrated small unit military actions in American history.   May I Quote You, General Chamberlain?
Observations & Utterances From The North’s Great Generals

by Randall Bedwell (editor)

“I feel that its sacrifice for me to be here in one sense of the word; but I do not wish myself back by any means. I feel that I am where duty called me.” – Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
A highly regarded scholar and religious man from Maine, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain relinquished a peaceful life as a college professor to follow his heart and do his part for the Union cause.   Under Chamberlain's Flag
The Stories of the 198th Pennsylvania and the 185th New York Volunteers
by Jeffrey L. Wood

“Honor answering honor.” Over the years, much has been written and movies have been made around the wartime life of Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain and his heroics as commander of the 20th Maine Volunteers. Hidden within the shadows of his fame lies an incredible story few have heard, as Chamberlain is promoted from the 20th Maine to take command of a brigade. In short time, his new command consists of two newly formed regiments, which Chamberlain leads during the final year of America’s bloody Civil War. This is the story of those two regiments, who under direction of now General Chamberlain, are credited with spearheading the break of the nine month siege around Petersburg and the pursuit of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia to Appomattox Court House, Virginia. A chase, whose historic climatic end results in the surrender of the Confederacy’s largest army and ultimately leads to the end of the war itself.
This easy-to-read wartime saga, told in large part by the soldiers themselves, brings forward their story for the sole purpose of bestowing upon them the honor they so greatly deserve. Here is that incredible story that, until now, has somehow fallen through the cracks of history.

Longfellow Books

Longfellow
A Rediscovered Life

by Charles C. Calhoun

In the first biography of Longfellow in almost fifty years, Charles C. Calhoun seeks to solve a mystery: Why has one of America’s most famous writers fallen into oblivion? His answer to this question takes us through a life story that reads like a Victorian family saga and reveals the man who introduced Americans to the literatures of other countries while creating a gallery of American icons – among them Paul Revere, John and Priscilla Alden, Miles Standish, the Village Blacksmith, Hiawatha, and Evangeline.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Paul Revere's Ride
illustrated by Ted Rand

Longfellow's well-known poem never appeared to better advantage: Rand has created a rich rendition of the Revolutionary landscape. And Revere himself is the perfect patriot, rugged and intense as he saddles up, "Ready to ride and spread the alarm - through every Middlesex village and farm." As Revere rides, the urgency of the pictures inspires the reader to flip the pages at an increasing pace until the dramatic confrontation of the Redcoats and the farmers. If there is any complaint here, it is with Longfellow himself, for rearranging the facts to exclude mention of Revere's fellow riders, Dawes and Prescott. Nevertheless, this is a gem of a lesson about one glorious morning in America's history.
