Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine
In August of 1862, a new regiment of volunteers was being formed in the state of Maine. The 20th regiment. Their Colonel was a West Point graduate named Adelbert Ames, already hardened by battle. He was so disgusted by the sight of these new recruits, that he told them all to "desert and go home". But of course they didn't…
Their Lieutenant Colonel was an obscure theology professor named Joshua Chamberlain, who received his commission by political appointment. Yet, by the end of the war, he rose to the rank of Major General, won the Congressional Medal of Honor, and was chosen by Ulysses S. Grant to receive the surrender of the Confederates.
The men that comprised the ranks of the 20th Maine were a bunch of Yankee individualists, and they came from all walks of life…farmers, fishermen, loggers, and for a while, even mutineers. But they were all men who faced adversity against incredible odds and prevailed…
…At the frigid killing grounds of Fredericksburg, they piled up bodies of their dead comrades to protect themselves. Then, they had to listen to the sounds of bullets thudding into those lifeless bodies…
…At Gettysburg, their mission was to defend the corner of a hill "At all costs". Out-numbered and almost out of ammunition, the Mainers launched a desperate bayonet charge that saved the day, and possibly the entire Union Army.
…At Petersburg, Joshua Chamberlain was shot through from hip to hip while leading a charge. Amazingly, he remained on his feet to urge his men on…And at Gravelley Run, Chamberlain defined the moment again, by leading a charge after being struck off his horse by a minie ball...
…At Five Forks, the 20th Maine, having blundered into the Confederate rear, had to cut its way out against an overwhelming force…by the end of the day, the Union Army took five thousand prisoners.
…And finally, Chamberlain, at his own initiative, ordered a somber and touching tribute to his noble foes, whom he honored during the surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox Court House.
DVD $23.99, 55 minutes

  Gettysburg
Summer 1863. The Confederacy pushes north into Pennsylvania. Union divisions converge to face them. Two great armies will clash at Gettysburg, site of a theology school. For three days, through such legendary actions as Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge, the fate of "one nation, indivisible" hangs in the balance.
The bloodiest battle fought on American soil comes to the screen in a powerful production "about the strategies, calculations, mistakes and heroism that turned the tide of the Civil War…a film Civil War buffs will find indispensable" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, Richard Jordan and more play key roles in this magnificent epic based on Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Killer Angels, filmed at actual battle locations and rigorously authenticated down to the boots.

  Chamberlain Collage Mug by Kunstler
On the back of the mug it is written: Joshua L. Chamberlain was not a general when he fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. Nevertheless, the Professor of Rhetoric from Bowdoin College in Maine had significant input, and some have even called him the savior of Gettysburg. With only 360 men, but with a formidable position, he successfully defended Little Round Top against a seeming insurmountable number of Alabama troops. In a furious bayonet charge, Chamberlain and the 20th Maine forced the exhausted Alabamans back down the hill, saving the day. In June 1864, Chamberlain was seriously wounded at Petersburg, leading General Grant to promote him to brigadier general. When Lee and his men formally surrendered on April 12, 1865, Chamberlain ordered his men to salute the defeated enemy. Thirty years after Gettysburg, congress recognized Chamberlain with the Medal of Honor.

Signal Whistle
The American Army first organized companies of Light Infantry in 1775. These highly mobile units were initially made up of riflemen known for their speed and marksmanship whose primary role was as skirmishers. Small shrill whistles made of wood, antler, or other common materials played a role in signaling commands to these Light Infantry companies, who could not rely on the beating of the company drum to relay field communications.
The stained wooden whistle is patterned on a period example. It is 4 1/4” long with a short rawhide lanyard, packaged in a poly bag with an insert giving its history and some common marksman’s signals.
$6.75 each

Bosun's Whistle
The Boatswain's Pipe (pronounced "bosun's") is one of the oldest and most distinctive pieces of nautical equipment. The boatswain's pipe, whistle, or flute, was used in Greece and Rome to keep the stroke of galley slaves. During the Crusades it was utilized to call English cross bowmen to the deck for attack. Because its shrill tune could be heard above most of the activity on board, it later was used to signal various happenings such as knock-off and the boarding of officials. This signaling device was so essential to the well-being of the ship that it became a badge of office and honor in the British and American Navy.
This beautifully detailed solid brass and copper Navy Boatswain's Pipe comes with a quality 39 inch solid brass chain lanyard. The pipe has a traditional anchor design inlaid in copper on both sides. The boatswain's pipe measures 5 inches long, and the pipe and chain weigh 1.6 ounces. The boatswain's pipe comes with a beautiful solid hardwood storage and display case. A solid brass Navy anchor design is inlaid into the lid of the case.
$14.95 each

Compass
This highly polished solid brass compass with a hinged lid is excellent for camping and outdoor use, and makes a perfect compass for a Cub Scout or a Boy Scout. The compass is the size of a standard pocket watch, measuring slightly over 1 3/4 inches in diameter, 5/8 inch thick, and weighs 1.68 ounces. The case is stamped from thick solid brass. The compass needle is accurate, quick and responsive.
$7.95 each

Civil War Cannon
12-Pounder Light Gun Civil War Cannon (“the Napoleon”) Prior to the 1850's field artillery batteries were equipped with a mixture of smoothbore field guns and howitzers. In 1853 the French Army introduced a 12-pounder field gun, named after Napoleon III, which revolutionized field artillery. The Napoleon was light enough to be moved rapidly on the battlefield by horses, heavy enough to destroy field fortifications almost a mile away, and versatile enough to fire solid shot, shell, spherical case, and canister. This is an entirely metal miniaturization of the Napoleon Cannon, measuring 4.5 inches long and 2 inches wide. All parts of the model move—the barrel can be moved up and down and the wheels roll. This is perfect for the history buff who builds replicas of battle scenes or for any person interested in historical artillery.

Restrike of the Confederate Cent
This 1861 Confederate penny is a little larger than a nickel and almost the size a quarter from the original Confederate dies made by Robert Lovett, Philadelphia, Penn., for the Confederate States of America.
Mr. Lovett said he received the order to make these cents for the Confederacy from a well known jewelry firm in Philadelphia. He became afraid that the United States government might arrest him for giving assistance to the enemy so he buried them in his cellar until after the war was over.
