TOUR GUIDE: For people with an interest in history who enjoy sharing their knowledge with new people, guiding in the Skolfield-Whittier House and the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum provides an essential service for the Society. We provide training and orientation in the spring, as well as a variety of guiding options, from public tours to school groups. MUSEUM STORE STAFF: Work in our museum gift shop, greeting visitors and selling merchandise. Training is provided, with experience in retail and with a cash register helpful. COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT(S): Those who are detailed orientated with an interest in history will enjoy working with the collections. The volunteer collections assistant(s) will help staff research documents and artifacts, working towards a better understanding of the individual objects that make up the large collection. On a project to project basis, help may also be needed in an effort to improve the organization and storage of the entire collection. Training will be provided. RESEARCH ROOM ASSISTANT: Do you have a knack for digging into history? We need people to help visiting researchers and answer requests from our members and the public. This involves working with the Society’s documentary and research collections. OFFICE ASSISTANT(S): Our office is always bustling with activity and we are looking for someone to join in the action. Our office assistant will contribute their talents through a variety of tasks: organizing research files, assisting with mass-mailings, data entry, and simply helping staff with all the day-to-day tasks of an office. You and your friends can also volunteer on an “as needed” basis to assist with large mailings. EVENT STAFF: If your interest lies in sporadic work, why not consider helping out at Society events? We need help with program planning, baking, staffing the event, or providing other forms of assistance. HANDY-PERSON WORK: We need people to carry out small painting projects, general repairs, and construction of exhibit furniture. While we do not normally involve volunteers directly in restoration, there are dozens of projects that need your help.
